City officials are hosting a series of meetings, giving the public the chance to weigh in on a new pilot program that would allow off-leash hours in eight parks across the city during certain hours. If public reaction to the proposed pilot is positive, the program will begin in April.

For the last couple of weeks, the city has also been soliciting comments through an online survey, and through 12,000 post cards mailed to residents near the proposed parks.

Thursday, five neighborhood residents showed up at Trail Wind Elementary School, which is near Cypress Park, one of the eight proposed for the pilot program. Most attendees were there to ask questions: Will dogs be allowed in playgrounds? No. Will they be allowed off-leash in park parking lots? No. Will people still have to clean up after their dogs? Yes.

Two residents, Gordon McGee and Ed Zollinger, are in strong support of off-leash hours for dogs in Cypress Park. "It's a good way to get more use out of our neighborhood park," said McGee. Zollinger thinks that more people with dogs will bring more activity to the park, which will make it safer for everyone and discourage illegal activity. [...]
