Anonymous donors pay off Kmart layaway accounts - Yahoo! Finance

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) -- The young father stood in line at the Kmart layaway counter, wearing dirty clothes and worn-out boots. With him were three small children. He asked to pay something on his bill because he knew he wouldn't be able to afford it all before Christmas . Then a mysterious woman stepped up to the counter. "She told him, 'No, I'm paying for it,'" recalled Edna Deppe , assistant manager at the store in Indianapolis. "He just stood there and looked at her and then looked at me and asked if it was a joke. I told him it wasn't, and that she was going to pay for him. And he just busted out in tears." [...] ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Associated Press writers Michael J. From The Big Bang To Intelligent Life: The Four Eras Of Astrobiology : 13.7: Cosmos And Culture : NPR/Excellent, thanks Christie! :)

ESO The Crab Nebula — 6,000 light-years away — is the remnant of a supernova explosion. It was observed by man almost 1,000 years ago, in the year 1054. This past Sunday I was asked to give an opening lecture at an international conference on astrobiology, linking cosmology to the emergence of life on Earth and other planetary platforms. We, and any other alien creature that might exist, are products of the same laws of physics and chemistry that operate across the cosmos. At its most basic level, life is a set of self-sustaining chemical reactions capable of metabolizing energy and, crucially, of reproducing according to Darwinian evolution. So, living creatures are self-organizing bundles of molecules capable of creating [...] ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ You can keep up with more of what Marcelo is thinking on Facebook     . Dangers of “Crying It Out” | Psychology Today/Thanks, Carrie! :)

Letting babies "cry it out" is an idea that has been around since at least the 1880s when the field of medicine was in a hullaballoo about germs and transmitting infection and so took to the notion that babies should rarely be touched (see  Blum, 2002 , for a great review of this time period and attitudes towards childrearing). In the 20 th  century, behaviorist James Watson, interested in making psychology a hard science, took up the crusade against affection as president of the American Psychological Association. He applied the mechanistic paradigm of behaviorism to child rearing, warning about the dangers of too much mother love. The 20 th  century was the time when "men of science" were assumed to know better than mothers[...] Full article at   Posted via email from Moments of Awareness

Full Moon May Spoil Geminid Meteor Shower's Peak Tomorrow | Meteors, Fireballs & Meteor Shower Viewing | Skywatching Tips

Star trails and a Geminids meteor over Georgia in 1985. CREDIT: Jimmy Westlake View full size image The last big meteor shower of the year — the annual Geminids shower — peaks tomorrow (Dec. 13), but bright moonlight is threatening to wash out what is usually one of the most spectacular light shows of the year. Lunar observers got a nice sight of the full moon and a total lunar eclipse on Dec. 10, but meteor shower enthusiasts will be disappointed to hear that this bright moon will likely spoil tomorrow night's show. Light from our planet's natural satellite is expected to illuminate the night sky, making  [...] ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ You can follow staff writer Denise Chow on Twitter @denisechow .
