ESO The Crab Nebula — 6,000 light-years away — is the remnant of a supernova explosion. It was observed by man almost 1,000 years ago, in the year 1054. This past Sunday I was asked to give an opening lecture at an international conference on astrobiology, linking cosmology to the emergence of life on Earth and other planetary platforms. We, and any other alien creature that might exist, are products of the same laws of physics and chemistry that operate across the cosmos. Letting babies "cry it out" is an idea that has been around since at least the 1880s when the field of medicine was in a hullaballoo about germs and transmitting infection and so took to the notion that babies should rarely be touched (see  Blum, 2002 , for a great review of this time period and attitudes towards childrearing). In the 20 th  century, behaviorist James Watson, interested in making psychology a hard science, took up the crusade against affection as president of the American Psychological Association. He applied the mechanistic paradigm of behaviorism to child rearing, warning about the dangers of too much mother love. Lunar observers got a nice sight of the full moon and a total lunar eclipse on Dec. 10, but meteor shower enthusiasts will be disappointed to hear that this bright moon will likely spoil tomorrow night's show.
