Scam Alert: Qwest has merged; it is not going out of business | Scam and Consumer Alerts | Idaho Statesman

I’m sure you’ve seen or heard the advertising featuring a green Slinky. Hundreds of the coiled toys move down steps to help let consumers know that Qwest is becoming CenturyLink. If you are a customer, the envelope explaining the merger has arrived in your mail. It’s a merger, plain and simple. I’m willing to bet you have spent little, if any, time thinking about it (unless you are a Qwest employee). A few salespeople for competing communication companies have thought plenty about it, and it appears they came up with a new sales pitch for telemarketers. The script goes something like this: “We understand you are a Qwest customer. You know, Qwest is going out of business. We don’t want your (insert one or all of the following: phone, Internet, satellite TV) interrupted, so we’re offering a special deal to move to our company.” If the Slinky is the transition tool for Qwest to CenturyLink, green slime should be the mascot for any business that bases its sales pitch on creatin

Mexican trucks seeking US access face obstacles | US News | Idaho Statesman

McALLEN, Texas — It will be at least two months before any Mexican truckers pass safety, English and national security checks and win approval to cruise middle America's highways under a long-awaited cross-border trucking agreement between the two countries, U.S. Department of Transportation officials said Thursday. And even then it remains to be seen how many Mexican trucking companies will actually join the three-year pilot program that balances national security concerns and free-flowing commerce at the border. A Mexican trucking association suggested it would not be many because the temporary nature of the program would not make the investment worthwhile. Mexican truck drivers in the program will face more scrutiny than thousands of trucks that cross the border daily because they will now be allowed to leave the narrow border trade zones and head for destinations deeper inside the U.S. But criminal activity has been a problem for years even within the U.S. governmen

Mexico finds 2 sculptures of Mayan warriors | World News | Idaho Statesman

MEXICO CITY — Mexican archaeologists have found two 1,300-year-old limestone sculptures of captured Mayan warriors that they say could shed light on the alliances and wars among Mayan cities during the civilization's twilight. The life-size, elaborate sculptures of two warriors sitting cross-legged with hands tied behind their backs were found in May in the archaeological site of Tonina in southern Chiapas state along with two stone ballgame scoreboards. The 5-foot (1.5-meter) tall sculptures have hieroglyphic inscriptions on their loincloths and chest that say the warriors belonged to the city of Copan, archaeologist Juan Yadeun said in a news release Wednesday. Yadeun said the discovery proves warriors from Copan helped those in Palenque during the city's' 26-year war against Tonina for control of the Usumacinta river. "The finding of the two captives of Copan is physical evidence that corroborates (the city's) alliance with Palenque in its fight

Uploading Video Game Footage Online Would Become Illegal Under New American Bill at GamingExcellence

A new bill has been proposed in the USA to curb the online upload of videos of copyrighted content. While the bill is aimed at preventing the internet community from uploading music, TV shows and movies to services such as YouTube and MegaVideo, the rather loose wording of the bill has some rather nefarious consequences for the video game industry and the way in which video games are marketed today. In essence, uploading a video showing the craziest Minecraft creation or a game guide showing the location of all the hidden packages in GTA, would be punishable by a hefty fine and/or prison time! Printer produces personalised 3D chocolate | Science Blog

Manufacturing and retail could get a boost from a newly-developed 3D chocolate printer. In the long term the technology could be used by customers to design many different products themselves – tailor-made to their needs and preferences. The project is being led by the University of Exeter in collaboration with the Brunel University and software developer Delcam. It is funded as part of the Research Council UK Cross-Research Council Digital Economy Programme and is managed by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) on behalf of ESRC, AHRC and MRC. 3D printing is a technology where a three-dimensional object is created by building up successive layers of material. The technology is already used in industry to produce plastic and metal products, but this is the first time the principles have been applied to chocolate.
