In the summer of 2000, before Bush was even elected, Dude and I lived in Jacksonville, NC, a Marine Corps town from top to bottom. Our neighbors ran a tailoring/dry-cleaning business on the main strip out of Camp LeJeune. They wondered aloud to us several times that summer why, when there was no significant military action taking place in a desert area and no sign that one would be upcoming, nearly all the uniforms coming in were desert warfare camos. At the time, Dude and I said, "Apparently someone's planning a desert action." The really disturbing thing about it is that, if this was related to Bush's plans, not only was he sure he'd win the Presidency (to a greater degree than should be possible pre-election), but he had some power to influence military prep activities.
