Consumer Alert: Get your documents shredded for free, then come to dinner | Scam and Consumer Alerts | Idaho Statesman

The next eight days will be the busiest of the year for the Better Business Bureau. There is something in it for you.

This Saturday, Oct. 23, the BBB and local partners offer free document shredding. We will be setting up shop in the Nampa Kmart parking lot between 10 a.m. and noon. You bring up to three boxes of sensitive documents you no longer need and watch as volunteers dump those boxes into bins, which are lifted into the massive shredding trucks, which chomp and chew that paper into indistinguishable bits.

The cost to you: zero.

The value: priceless when you consider keeping those sensitive documents out of the hands of identity thieves.

We call the event Secure Your ID day. It’s part of a massive nationwide effort to help people protect their identities by doing one of the most simple things — destroying outdated sensitive documents.

Junk mail keeps piling up, receipts keep stacking up, statements grow old and useless. When the time comes to do the deep cleaning, we look at that pile of paper sitting on the table and we look at that little home shredder, which on a good day handles three pieces of thin paper at once, and we shudder at the idea of spending a Saturday afternoon feeding the shredder piece by piece.

If you’re wondering how long you should keep those documents and exactly what it is you should be shredding, the BBB has a whole list of free resources at http://snake-river.bbb.org/Identity-Theft-Resources.

As soon as the last sheet of paper is shredded, the BBB will shift gears to put the finishing touches on its signature event — Integrity Counts, a dinner on Friday, Oct. 29. You are invited to join us as we celebrate businesses that set the bar for operating with ethics and integrity.

Nearly 100 businesses were nominated this year. Judges reviewed the applications and identified four organizations they deemed worthy of the award this year: Inspirational Family Radio, the Make-A-Wish Foundation, Oasis Interactive, and Western Heating and Air-Conditioning. Congratulations!

As we gather to celebrate these organizations, we will be joined by Joseph Grenny. Joseph is co-author of the best-selling books “Crucial Conversations,” “Crucial Confrontations” and “Influencer.” He will share principles from “Influencer” on how you can create change in your personal and professional life. As Joseph says, “The greatest human capacity is the ability to change — both ourselves and others.”

Tickets for the dinner, awards ceremony and Joseph’s presentation are $60 and available online at http://snake-river.bbb.org/integritycounts.

A special thank you to the Idaho Statesman, our media partner, in making this event possible.
