Steve McQueen gave one interview in the last decade of his life — to a boy from a high-school newspaper.

The superstar had just turned down reporters from Time, Life and Newsweek.

“He was tired of it all,” McQueen biographer Marshall Terrill said. “He just wanted his privacy. He gave the interview to the kid because he had an affinity for kids and old people.”

Terrill and Barbara McQueen, the actor’s widow, brought their “Evening with Steve McQueen” exhibit to Meridian this month. Part book signing, part photo exhibit and part audience interaction, it focused on McQueen during his last years — a private man who liked old trucks, motorcycles and bargains, and just happened to be a movie star.

The world’s highest paid actor “shopped at K-Mart and got me $5 dresses,” said Barbara McQueen, then one of the world’s top fashion models. “It was because he grew up poor. … Then he’d turn around and buy me a $200 pair of shoes.” [...]
