Tony's a cool kid, and his mom and dad extend themselves beyond human capacity sometimes helping Tony manage the symptoms of his condition, which for years meant managing those symptoms for him, even when he didn't have the language skills to tell them clearly how he was feeling, and even when he was too little to understand, "Yes, other kids can have that or do that, but it's dangerous for you." There are lines of research that show great promise for Type I diabetes (which really isn't comparable to most peoples' Type II, especially when dealing with it in a baby or toddler; a person with Type I can't glibly say, "Oh, this is so bad for my blood sugar, I'm diabetic, ya know," and scarf down whatever's handy without in most cases very serious consequences, up to and sometimes including coma or death), and they should be vigorously pursued. Where they don't provide deeper understanding of this disease they will provide deeper understanding about something, and knowledge really is power. Something that seems insignificant now may be the turning point once we've gained further perspective.
