One million strong

Dear Friend,

EPA taking action
Chromium-6 isn't the only water-polluting chemical in the news. We've been leading the fight for years to get the rocket fuel component perchlorate -- linked to thyroid problems and developmental health issues -- out of our drinking water. In early February, we achieved a major victory when the EPA announced that it would set a federal drinking water standard for perchlorate!

After a six-year campaign by Environmental Working Group and other public health advocates, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services proposed that water utilities sharply reduce the amount of fluoride added to community drinking water. Three days later, the EPA proposed to grant a petition by EWG and two other environmental groups to end the use of the pesticide sulfuryl fluoride.

Bottled Water Scorecard
Our 2011 Bottled Water Scorecard grades more than 170 bottled waters on the fullness of their disclosures on their labels and websites. Nine out of ten of the best-selling brands didn't answer our basic questions: Where does the water come from? Is it purified? How? Have tests found contaminants?

If, after checking out the scorecard, you're ready to make 2011 your bottled-water free year, click here to sign EWG's pledge and start making cleaner, safer water choices.

It may still be winter, but I can't believe how much we've already accomplished. Thanks to your support, we've been able to do some amazing things this winter.

The people who make up our online community are special. You are passionate and driven -- and now, more than 1,000,000 strong. Together, we are able to move markets and create positive change across the country. I want to show my appreciation to each and every one of you. Click here to see my thank you video.

Removing Chromium-6 with Senators Boxer and Feinstein
Time and time again, we've seen that our community has the power to move Washington. One sign of our strength is the extraordinary response to our December report on the presence of the suspected carcinogen chromium-6 in drinking water in 31 cities across the U.S. Within days of the report's release, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced a plan to help local utilities assess chromium-6 in drinking water nationwide -- a solid first step to getting this dangerous substance out of our drinking water.

In January, Senators Barbara Boxer and Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., introduced the Protecting Pregnant Women and Children Act of 2011, which would require the EPA to set a safe legal limit on chromium-6 in drinking water. But we still need you to keep the momentum going. Click here to ask your senators to co-sponsor today!

Take action for cleaner, safer drinking water.

On the heels of the introduction of the Boxer/Feinstein bill, I testified at a hearing of the Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works, chaired by Senator Boxer. The bill -- and this hearing -- are a direct result of our research and commitment from supporters like you. Senator Boxer took time to issue a call to me -- and you. "Keep doing what you're doing." The progress we've made couldn’t have happened without your help. Supporters like you took action, sending in tap water samples and bottled water labels. This kind of people-powered research is what drives EWG each and every day to keep working for safer water and a cleaner environment. Thank you for being part of a year that is already exciting – and getting better by the day.

Sincerely,

Ken Cook
President, Environmental Working Group

P.S. We hope you find EWG's work valuable. If so, help EWG by making a donation today and get an EWG's Shopper's Guide to Pesticides shopping notepad. The notepad, a speed-read of our research on pesticide in food, lists conventionally grown fruits and vegetables lowest in pesticides and the "dirty dozen" that should be bought organically grown, when possible.
