ATV Dangers: Young Driver Accidents on the Rise - ABC News
In my opinion, this is yet another example of someone who means well in trying to have legislation enacted for everyone based upon his or her own personal tragedy but is completely unaware of or simply does not care about (one hopes the former) the consequences to others. Where we live, kids ride ATV's from a young age and start driving them around twelve-ish in many cases, or younger. It's not just a matter of fun or even convenience, but of practicality given the distances they need to travel and the terrain in which they're trying to get around. The few accidents kids who are used to driving ATV's have in the course of normal daily use tend to be minor; the people we see having accidents where they get badly injured are those who come up here on the occasional weekend, quads in the back of the truck, with the intention of 'tearin' it up, man'. The designation 'All-Terrain Vehicle' does not mean, "Top speed at all times, and yeah, we can get down that 'hill'." Maybe you can get down that three-hundred-foot vertical drop on an ATV, but if you don't know what you're doing and you're not cautious and well-versed enough in driving that machine you'll be in pieces before you hit the bottom. Blaming the equipment doesn't make it the equipment's fault, and in a free country it's not right for anyone to use the law to dictate the life choices of others based upon their own bad fortune.
