Will you now respect the occaisional need for medical attention in childbirth and be grateful that it exists? Anything can and does happen on a regular basis. No one is invinsible.

Hello cbelz,

First let me apologize for being so long in getting back to you. As you may know, we've been enjoying the company of our long-awaited first-born.

Well, I had to chuckle when I saw your 'Problem'. I find it kind of amusing that anyone aside from myself or my husband would consider the birth of our child a problem (and we most certainly don't, at that! :-D), but taking it in the spirit I'm guessing you meant it I'll address the issue as presented in the body of your post.

As to your question, I can only reiterate what I've said to anyone who's spoken to me about this and what's written on the Pregnancy FAQ at MomentsOfAwareness.com (http://www.momentsofawareness.com/pregnancy1/faq.htm#inappropriate [updated link (February 1, 2014): FAQ/Originally posted at momentsofawareness.com]). I feel that medical care is always appropriate when one desires it and/or when there is dysfunction in the body (in pregnancy as at any other time), always have. (For instance, in the case of my ectopic pregnancy sixteen years ago. If you like you can read about that here, http://momentsofawareness.blogspot.com/2004/10/re-your-baby.html, on the off chance you haven't already.)

I agree with you that the need for medical attention in childbirth is occasional, and as it happens our birth was not one of those occasions, but of course I'm grateful that it does exist when the need arises, yes. And yes, anything can and does happen; that's life in all it's wonder and beauty. Every new technology adds to the human toolbox in addressing the myriad of possibilities, and just as a hammer has it's appropriate uses, so does a doctor's knowledge. Misused or overused, either can cause a great deal of harm, even death, which is where I find myself sometimes concerned for those who use medical care simply because they feel more comfortable with it than without it. But it's not my place to judge what anyone else does and believing as I do that one's state of mind plays a tremendous part in one's health I feel it's often better to overuse medical care if it brings one peace of mind than to choose not to use it based solely on an ideal or principle and risk suffering increased mental stress that might translate into emotional dis-ease and eventually physical illness. Personally I evaluate each situation in which a doctor's care might be recommended or seem necessary and when it makes more sense to see someone than not to, I do. What anyone else chooses is up to them.

And it's true, no human is invincible. That's part of the human condition, and a good reason to remain humble and aware of one's own fallibility and vulnerability in any given moment. Of course, an attitude of humility and awareness tends to facilitate the appropriate use of any and all assistance available to us as humans as well as encouraging us to reach out for knowledge as we seek to empower ourselves as much as possible. To me, empowerment means being capable of discerning between what I'm capable of and what I need help with.

Thank you for a thought-provoking post. I'm disappointed that I've created in you/left you with the impression that I don't respect well-rendered appropriate medical care and would be interested to hear, if you wish to share, upon what that impression's based. In any case, best to you and yours. Take good care.

Love
Peace
