We should. It will require a major shift in (especially American) consciousness before any of us can survive this way, but it will be a shift for the better. I've been operating on this principle for years, and I know via repeat business that the quality of my work has not been in question. In our culture, many who would pay can't and many who can pay won't, thanks to a mindset that more for oneself is better and enough doesn't exist. We will find, at some point (whether in this generation or many generations from now) that indeed there is a limit to what we need, and even what we want, and that it's okay to share. People will share back when those who are scraping by can finally feel secure in their ability to meet their own daily needs and those who find self-esteem in their possessions find it instead within themselves.
