Letter - Treatment, Not Prison

To the Editor:

Re “Touching Off Debate, Missouri Tells Judges Cost of Sentences” (front page, Sept. 19):

The draconian “lock ’em up” policies that state and county prosecutors promote have led to the overcrowded prison system. Nearly half of all new prison admissions are nonviolent drug and alcohol offenders. These nonviolent offenders are better served by offering treatment, education and counseling instead of ineffective and expensive incarceration.
